Norwegian designers are probably the most practical an functionalistic designers in the world. For more than 1000 years ago and up too to day, we can follow the highly practical functional designs of housing, furniture, clothes, boats/ships and other products. As the rest of Scandinavia we are also strongly influenced by the minimalism and simplicity.
Historical the Viking ships were an outstanding example on an extremely good construction to tackle difficult whether conditions at see. How they where looking was not very important. As times goes on they were decorated, however, they are so perfect constructed that they also after all this years look aesthetic brilliant.
After the 2nd world war Norway had a time building the country and it was short of all kind of products, also furniture. So why should the producers invest in design when the consumers willingly bought all that was offered in the market place. The furniture designers went to the area of the public room.
The last years the consumers are gradually looking more and more to the quality of design. It is in the discussions, debates, magazines, newspapers and TV - more and more actual as tema: Interior and design.
The last 40 years we have some outstanding furniture products coming from Norwegian designers and its industry.
- "Siesta"- design Ingmar Relling (1966)
- "Laminette" - design Sven Ivar Dyste (1967)
- "Stressless original" - design Svein Leirdal, Svein Asbj¯rnsen, Jan Lade (1970)
- "Tripp Trapp" - design Peter Opsvik (1972)
- "Balans Variable" - design Peter Opsvik - concept Hans Chr. Mengshol (1978)
These examples of outstanding products have inspired producers in Norway and the rest of the world to developing hundreds of new products!
They are all products with innovative functional solutions made in a simple and minimalistic way. These basic solutions turn out to have a highly aesthetic standard.
The last years we have seen more and more artistic and aesthetic experiments from the furniture designers. Like Peter Opsviks "Nomadi" with the strong functions for living in small apartments and for easy moving to another one, combined with the art aspect. The young designers coming up with single products with highly aesthetic characters. A result of this development is among others "Norway Says" which for the 2nd year now are participating in the Milan Fair- SaloneSatellite.
Norway is due to oil a very rich nation. And to be rich is difficult for a nation as it is for a single person. We do not need at the very moment to concentrate on the design field to have the wheels going around. We know that the design element for the development of products any kind is the most central aspect for being competitive in the future - but we do very little about it. We feel that the other Scandinavian countries are far ahead of us. We also look at VIA in France and to SIDI in Spain, and of cause to Italy ! In the design industry we strongly miss a national strategy for design to be able to compete and meet well fitted in the marketplace in the future. We know that at the functional side of design aspect we have our core competence, and have the possibility to develop from that basis. We are fare away from the best aesthetic design from Italy, however, our functional solutions are very often better than all others - and that niche is for us important to develop and put in to new aesthetic dimensions to meet the future.
The design aspect will be more and more central in developing business in the future for all kind of products, and high quality design must be given greater attention - also in Norway.
And it will happen - hopefully before it is to late.
Peter Opsvik and his work show that it is possible. To design with a warm soul in a cold country.
